Course Presentation

Communication and information play a crucial role today in the operational and strategic practices of both public and private organizations. Understanding the mechanisms that govern these processes and possessing the tools to manage them are therefore essential prerequisites for entry and integration in several professional contexts.

The Degree Course provides specific theoretical and practical tools for recognizing the peculiarities of the different types of texts produced using different communication techniques and technologies, especially those related to the so-called 'new media'.

Of particular importance among the course objectives are the design, practical implementation, and management of forms of communication (e.g., web pages, multimedia or printed texts) that function of interface between the public and organizations or institutions. To this end, laboratory activities will be provided, mainly connected to multimedia communication.

In the academic year 2025/2026, the degree course has open admission. To enrol, applicants must hold an upper secondary school diploma or an equivalent qualification obtained abroad, recognised as valid in accordance with current regulations.

For enrollment procedures, please refer to the relevant page on the University's website, by clicking on the link below.

In accordance with Ministerial Decree 270/04, the Department of Communication and Economics is required to verify that students possess an adequate level of initial preparation at the time of enrolment.

This assessment of prior knowledge is not a prerequisite for enrolment, as the degree course has open admission. However, it is legally mandatory for all undergraduate degree programmes and must therefore be completed by the student within the deadlines indicated below.

Failure to undergo the initial knowledge assessment, or receiving an unsatisfactory result, does not prevent enrolment. However, if any Additional Learning Requirements (Obblighi Formativi Aggiuntivi – OFA) are not fulfilled by the end of the first academic year, students will not be permitted to enrol in the second year of the course. Instead, they will have to re-enrol as repeating students in the first year.

For the academic year 2025/2026, the initial knowledge assessment is considered successfully completed in one of the following two cases:

  • A final secondary school leaving mark of 85/100 or higher (or 51/60 for those who completed their secondary education under the former system). These students are deemed to possess adequate initial knowledge and will not be required to take any further assessment, as their school leaving mark will be recorded at the time of enrolment.
  • Successful completion of the CISIA Online Test in Human Sciences (TOLC-SU) with a score of 22 or higher (excluding the English language section). The TOLC-SU is administered by CISIA (the Interuniversity Consortium for Integrated Access Systems). TOLC-SU results are valid regardless of whether the test was taken at a university (tolc@uni) or remotely (tolc@casa), and regardless of the institution where it was taken.

All students who do not meet either of the above criteria may still enrol, but they will be assigned an Additional Learning Requirement (OFA), which must be fulfilled by 30 September of the first academic year.

For the academic year 2024/2025, those enrolling in the Degree Course in Communication Sciences will be required to take the assessment test of initial prerequisite knowledge.

The test is not selective and takes place once enrolled.

If the test is not passed, an Additional Training Obligation (OFA) is assigned, to be completed within the first year of the course, according to the instructions published in the paragraph ‘OFA - Additional Training Obligations’, found on the ‘Test and Registration’ page of this site, linked below.

The essential initial knowledge assessment test is based on the contents indicated in the dedicated Syllabuswhich can be downloaded in this section.

To find out the dates and how to enrol for the test, please visit the ‘Test and Registration’ page on this site, section ‘Assessment of initial essential knowledge’, linked below.

Students enrolled in the academic year 2024/2025
The Degree Course in Communication Sciences is open access for the academic year 2024/2025.

Students enrolling in the first year will be assigned an OFA (Additional Training Obligation),  to be fulfilled by September 30, 2025.

If students have taken the TOLC-SU before or after enrollment, but by 2024, and they have obtained a score equal to or higher than 15 in the Text Comprehension and Knowledge of the Italian Language sections, the obligation will be considered fulfilled.

The TOLC-SU, the CISIA Online Test for Humanities Degree Programmes, is a digital tool designed to assess the initial skills and knowledge of students who wish to enrol in university courses in the field of communication.

The test is divided into four distinct sections, each aimed at evaluating specific competencies:

  • Text Comprehension and Knowledge of the Italian Language section;
  • Knowledge and Skills Acquired During Prior Studies section;
  • Logical Reasoning section;
  • English section.

PLEASE NOTE: For admission to the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Communication Sciences, the English Language section is not included in the minimum score requirement of 22 points used to verify an adequate level of initial preparation.

The following sections contribute to the score used to assess suitability for admission to the Bachelor's Degree in Communication Sciences:

  • The "Text Comprehension and Knowledge of the Italian Language" section (60 minutes) consists of 30 multiple-choice questions designed to assess language proficiency not only in terms of comprehension but also in relation to different contexts of use.
  • The "Knowledge and Skills Acquired During Prior Studies" section (20 minutes) includes 10 multiple-choice questions aimed at assessing the ability to understand and analyse written texts.
  • The "Logical Reasoning" section (30 minutes) comprises 10 multiple-choice questions intended to evaluate fundamental mathematical skills and the ability to tackle quantitative problems.

Each question has five possible answers, only one of which is correct. The TOLC-SU score is calculated as follows:

  • 1 point for each correct answer;
  • 0 points for unanswered questions;
  • –0.25 points for each incorrect answer.

To pass the test for the purposes of enrolment in the Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Sciences, and confirm adequate preparation, a minimum score of 22 points is required, excluding the English Language section.

The test is delivered online via a dedicated digital platform managed and monitored by CISIA, or in person at authorised and suitably equipped university venues.
